About This Site

Arizona Montessori Schools is an independent, family-built directory of every Montessori school we can find in Arizona — private, charter, and public. We're not owned by a school or a network; we just think finding a Montessori classroom shouldn't take twenty browser tabs.

Montessori in 60 seconds

Montessori is a child-led approach to education developed by Dr. Maria Montessori beginning in 1907. Classrooms mix three-year age spans, children choose meaningful work from carefully designed hands-on materials, and teachers act as guides rather than lecturers. The result, done well: unusual concentration, independence, and a genuine love of learning.

How to spot the real thing

“Montessori” isn't a trademarked term — anyone can put it on a sign. When you tour, look for:

  • Mixed-age classrooms (3–6, 6–9, 9–12) rather than single grades
  • A long, uninterrupted morning work period (2.5–3 hours)
  • Guides with AMS or AMI training credentials
  • Real Montessori materials in daily use — not just on the shelf
  • Children moving freely and choosing their own work

Why Arizona is special

Arizona has one of the strongest school-choice environments in the country: dozens of tuition-free Montessori charter schools, plus STO tax-credit scholarships and ESA funding that put private Montessori within reach of far more families than most states.
